The Matho monastery was founded by a prominent Tibetan spiritual practitioner, Sakyapa Lama Dungpa Dorjey, the the 16th century. Matho monastery is the only one in Ladakh belonging to the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. For many decades the monastery had remained without having any spiritual supervisor, Lama or Grand Abbot.

Since both the villagers and the monastery of Matho had pleaded, with the utmost reverence to H.H. Sakya Trizin to provide an abbot to supervise and guide the monks and the monastery, His Eminence Ngor Luding, Grand Abbot Jamyang Tenpa Nyima, Holder of the throne of Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo, arrived at Matho monastery in 1968.

For ten years, 1968 to 1978, he supervised the monastery and the monks very well.

At present, His Eminence Luding Khen Rinpoche is performing the functions of an incumbent abbot at Matho monastery.
